We will park at Hoddam Bridge and take the (optional) steep but short climb to visit the Repentance Tower.
From there we will head down to the River Annan and follow the north bank along the Annandale Way before heading back along farm tracks and lanes to visit Hoddam Castle.
From there it's a short walk back to the cars and on to the Metal Bridge Inn where we will join friends old and new for
Christmas 🎄 lunch at 1:00p.m.
Coach Walk: Sands:9.00am
We start near the bridge at the entrance to Eusemere Lodge. We walk alongside the lake, an easy stroll with lovely views down Ullswater. We eventually reach a short road walk until the entrance to Cross Dormont, a farm and campsite. We go past Seat farm and reach “Cross-a-dyke”. We then cross a boggy, gorse field to reach the corner of Auterstone Wood. Here, we almost about-face and start “climbing”, a gentle ascent across a moor/fell passing Barton Park on the left, reaching “the Cockpit”, a low stone circle. Just prior to this, on the right, is the end of “High Street” the Roman road. If we get good weather, the views from the walk across this moor of almost all of Ullswater, are beautiful. We then go North then N-West to reach a crossing on the road and continue on into Pooley Bridge.
Then- XMAS DINNER!!!

Car Walk:Sands:9.00am
A nice gentle walk of about 5.5 miles with very little ascent, just enough to work up healthy appetite for Xmas lunch. We will have plenty of time so we can amble along at a nice easy pace, as we normally do on my walks. We head off north from Pooley Bridge, on the east side of the River Eamont and go as far as the lovely little village of Barton, Apparently the church is worth a visit so we can take a look round, taking care not to be struck by a thunderbolt, before we continue south east via Celleron and Windy Hall Farm. We then turn west for the final stretch back into Pooley Bridge. A lovely walk to start off what should be a lovely day.
