This Weeks Walks

It would be very much appreciated if all walk leaders submitted a description of their walk. Preferably by the Monday preceding the walk. Descriptions can be emailed to

A Walk

Kirkby Lonsdale

11 Miles Grade 2

Leader: Graham Bell

Meet up at the Sands as usual and if the weather makes Haystacks too challenging, we will do a more suitable lower alternative, without driving so far. Surprise walk!

My planned route  for Sunday's 'A' walk was from Barbon over Low Barbon Fell to Leck and on to Kirkby Lonsdale via Casterton.  This would involve crossing Eaves Gill on Barbon Low Fell which is an awkward gill scramble or difficult beck crossing at the best of times.

Following the recent and forecast heavy rain I am reluctant to lead a party of walkers across the gill.

I have, therefore, decided to cancel my 'A' walk and have agreed with Ian that he will lead a combined A/B walk.

Starting from the pretty village of Barbon the walk follows the course of Barbon Beck although due to a footpath closure we’ll have to follow a quiet fell side road rather than the proposed route through Barbon Woods. The walk then follows a rising moorland track reaching the pot-holing centre at Bull Pot Farm. From here we’ll head south west crossing the shoulder of Barbon Low Fell and take lunch on the top of Brownthwaite Pike the highest point of the walk at 1300 ft.

After this it’s downhill all the way back to Kirby Lonsdale visiting some fellside sculptures by the renowned artist Andy Goldsworthy along the way.

A nice easy flat walk of 5.5 -6 miles

Heading North from Devil's Bridge alongside the river

and eventually crossing the river and coming back down the other side. A mixture of riverside paths, open fields, woodland paths and a little bit of road walking. The only climb is a flight of steps about half a mile from the start. No doubt there will be some mud along the way.
