B Walk

Sale Fell - Ling Fell

8 Miles Grade 2/3

Leader: John McKay

This is a delightful circular walk with the start/finish in Talkin village. After a fairly gentle climb from the village you reach one of the best viewpoints in this part of Cumbria the summit of Talkin Fell (1250 ft) marked by a trig point and a collection of tall cairns. Weather permitting we would plan a coffee break here to enjoy the beautiful location and extensive views. Then fully rested we would cross to Simmerson Hill (1312 ft) at almost the same level, and then traverse the ridge line again with spectacular views, this time of Geltsdale.  After a gentle descent into the valley the path then parallels the River Gelt for a while as  we meander back to the cars.

Walk Info :

In the interest of honest transparency there are a couple of points worth noting. 1.The first one is that although this walk fits the grading  of '3' there is undoubtably more ascent than you might normally expect from this grade, however none of it can be described as steep, more accurately as steady, even  gentle.

2. The recce walk today came after a period of significant rainfall and not unexpectedly several paths were rather boggy, as on any fell.

3. There is only one stile on the whole walk but we do cross it twice!

This is a very popular walk that appears on the programme several times a year but each walk leader does it a different way. My way, in the words of the late and in my opinion, not very great Frank Sinatra, is undoubtedly the best, but in the words of Mandy Rice Davies, I would say that, wouldn’t I. We set off from the sort of lay-by about half a mile from the Pheasant Pub and just a few hundred yards before Wythop Church (GR 192303). It’s a gradual climb south east for just under a mile to the summit of Lothwaite. We turn east for half a mile of flattish walking to the summit of Sale Fell and then downhill to Dodd Crag and continue downhill to Eskin and on to the start of Ling Fell. We will probably have lunch at this point before beginning our ascent of Ling Fell which is a gradual ascent of the Corpse Road. We go down the other side and end up back at our lunch stop and return to Eskin via the pretty little hamlet of Wythop. We go east along woodland paths and forest tracks, passing the ruins of an old chapel, before we end up back at the lay-by. It’s then off to the Craggs for refreshment. A lovely walk, great views of Bassenthwaite and Skiddaw, not too strenuous and it will be done at a comfortable pace.

This is not a high walk over the fells which is probably just as well as there is another storm forcast for next weekend - Saturday and Sunday , We   park in the village of Gilsland and take the path along the Roman Wall to Willowford and climb up from the river heading for Birdozwald camp , from here we double back into the village by a different route and  take the path along the River Irthing to Spy Top    and drop down into the Home woods , we will walk to the Popping stone and have lunch here , this is  as far as you can walk up the Irthing Gorge as the sides become very steep and  in accessible , From here its up to the water fall one of the hidden gems of the walk which if there has been heavy rain will be quite spectacular , We make our way back to the  village via a different route . It may be a  little boggy underfoot which is  somewhat expected with the  damp weather , there is a coffee shop and pub in the village for refreshments
