The walk starts from the junction of the A591 and the lane signed for Scarness and St Bega’s Church (GR233291) where there is plenty of parking. From here we’ll follow the lane to the lakeside before heading across fields to the ancient St. Bega’s church that sits right on the side of the lake. This is a good spot to look out for the male Osprey catching fish for his recently hatched brood. The Ospreys on Bassenthwaite have bred here every year since 2001. They migrate from West Africa flying a distance of around 4000 miles.

After walking round the edge of Mirehouse we’ll cross the A591 to enter Dodd Wood   (toilets here). Following the signs up to the viewpoint that is manned by volunteers from the RSPB where there are telescopes, which give views of the nesting pair of Ospreys.  We’ll then take zig-zag tracks climbing through woodland to reach the top of Dodd fell at 1650 ft. although modest in height it is a fine viewpoint. From here it’s an easy return to the Dodd Wood car park and a further mile or so back to the cars.

Sunday 23rd June 2019 - Car Walk - Sands: 9.00am

Tarn Crag and Grey Crag in the Sleddale Fell area are little visited so this is a chance to bag 2 somewhat remote Wainwrights as well as a third, being Branstree.

We will park at the far end of Haweswater and follow the Gatesgarth pass. After the top of the pass (splendid views) we continue southwards for half a mile before climbing to the left following a wall which will lead to Tarn crag. We then continue to the south east across ground which may be a little wet, to reach Grey Crag. Turning to the North East we reach Harrop Pike (not a Wainwright but well worth a visit). From there we walk to the North West to reach the summit of Branstree. After leaving the summit we make our way back down the Gatesgarth pass (more splendid views) to the parking place.

Barrow & Outerside

8 Miles Grade 2

Leader: Sue Greenwod

Sands: 9.15am

Geoff has asked me to lead his walk so the route will be the same: from Braithwaite (park where you can and convene on the little bridge), up Barrow, down Barrow a bit, up Low Moss and down a bit, up Outerside and down for good to the Miners` track. Back via Uzzicar and the Newlands Beck and camp site. Coffee at the pub in Braithwaite.
It must be warmer and dryer than this week!
