The walk starts from above Swinside where Grainsgill Beck meets the Caldew. There is plenty of parking which is free. We take a short stretch of the Cumbria Way which takes us up to Lingy Hut. Although not completely finished with uphill walking a large proportion of it is now done. From Lingy hut we take a path in a westerly  direction. This takes us to a location on the map between Great Lingy Hill and Little Lingy hill. It is shown as ‘Pile of Stones’, probably because that is what it is. This location was re measured in the not to far distant past and was re classified as Englands newest mountain as it is over 2000ft (previously thought to be just under). Having conquered this new peak(don’t blink or you may not realise you have done it) we head for Great Lingy Hill then High Pike. Probably a good stop for dinner.

Its then a good walk to Carrock Fell and the remains of an Iron Age Fort. We retrace our steps to the head of Brandy Gill to make our descent. I don’t think this path is used much so it may be somewhere new to you. It takes us back to the old mines which we pass on the way up. This is a fairly easy walk with plenty of points of interest. Two Wainwrights on good paths with no scrambling and Englands newest mountain thrown in. This walk is a repeat of the Sunday winter walk I did so specially put on for you Wednesday Hikers.

As I said, not a tough one this but a good one all the same.

Be there or be square. Pete.

Car Walk:Sands:9.00am

We will park at Armathwaite Bridge and walk clockwise, first following the east bank of the Eden and then crossing fields to the outskirts of Ainstable. We cross more fields to reach High Northscough. We then climb in a south easterly direction on a quiet road with great views to the south west. At Barugh Cottages we cross the fields to Ruckcroft and then more fields take us to Longdales where there is an interesting collection of unusual birds. From there we follow paths through Coombs Wood returning to Armathwaite. Hopefully there will still be a display of bluebells in the woods.

A Walk

Miller Moss - Carrock Fell

7 Miles Grade 2

Leader: Pete Rutland

Sands: 9.15am

Starting at Longlands where there should be plenty of free parking. A very short bit of the Cumbria Way, going East, takes us to a path that goes up Longlands Fell. From there we head in the direction of Great Sea Fell but cut back on ourselves above Charlerton Gill to take in the summit of Brae Fell. Then its back to Great Sca Fell via Little Sca Fell. A short steep descent takes us to Meal Fell. A bit of down and up gets us onto Great Cockup (thats providing we don’t have one).

After taking in five Wainwrights we head down over Grouse Butts and Little Cockup. A path takes us back east then north to the cars. Sounds a lot but all relatively easy stuff on good paths. An area that feels a bit remote with some good views, a Wainwright baggers dream.

B Walk

Skirwith - Kirkland - Blencarn

8.5 Miles Grade 3

Leaders: Chris & Tom Fortune

Sands: 9.15am

This is a special offer to those, who like us, did not book a place on the club holiday. It is a walk in the North Pennines providing extensive views with not much climbing, primarily out in open fellside that includes walking on the course of the old Roman Road known as Maiden Way. We start in the village of Skirwith and proceed on a variety of field paths in a N/E direction and pass through Bank Wood settlement before joining Maiden Way, which will be close to our planned lunch stop. From here there will be the option to make a circular uphill trip to Lad Slack before rejoining the group and proceeding up a steady but not steep incline to pick up the path that leads us back. This is a gently declining path that leads past Kirkland into Blencarn. This walk includes regular awkward stone stiles. At least one of which proved to have difficult spacing for those of us with less than average leg length. The good news is that even I managed it!

Hope to see you there. It will be well worth the effort.
