A Walk

Great Dodd - Cough Head

8.5 Miles Grade 2

Leader: Bruce McMillan

Meet at Sands for 09.15 or go to the lay-by on the A69 near where the Toilets used to be, just before The Farm Shop Cafe, for 09.45.

Very pleasant walk of approximately  8 miles over fields, along roads, through Hayton, Greenwell, skirting Gelt Woods and return to Hayton.   Usual supply of    mud, stiles, farm yard smells, cracking views and scintillating company.        Weather optional.

We start out from High Row, travelling along the Old Coach Road until crossing the bridge/ford at Groove Beck for a grassy track on the left. This broad, ascending ridge of springy turf i.e. bog-wet, leads in the distance, to Great Dodd, passing the craggy lump of Randerside. At Great Dodd, there is a shelter just off left at the summit should we want a break. We then go south west to Little Dodd then north west to Calfhow Pike. We carry on north east north to reach Clough Head where, depending on the weather, we have great views of Blencathra. We then travel down east to reach the Old Coach Road where we travel back via Mariel Bridge to High Row where we started.
