A/B Walk

Ashstead Fell - Whinfell Beacon

8/9 Miles Grade 2

Leader: John McKay

Grid Ref. OL43 587 587 RSPB Carpark Cleskets

We take the muddy trail towards Forest Head, turn across some amazing terrain where the quarries were. Follow to Howgill, Stagsike and a comfort stop. Round the Tarn, Lunch on the seats at

Tindale and return along the disused railway track which once had Stephenson’s rocket hauling loads up and down to Hallbankgate and Brampton.   Tea and scones at The Hub at Hallbankgate which is staffed and run by volunteers. It will be muddy!

It's the Borrowdale Valley but not the one we normally go to.

This one is about 7 miles south of Shap and we set of from the layby on the A6 at Huck's Bridge (GR 552 037) We go south east heading for our first objective, the cairn on Ashstead Fell. It's a fairly steep climb to the cairn but short. We continue south east, to Mabbin Crag, Castle Fell and Whinfell Beacon, 472m, not quite the high point of the day Castle Fell is 3m higher.

We will probably have lunch at this point. The outward half of this walk is a bit of a roller coaster, lots of ups and downs. Not being an owner of a Smartphone or GPS I've no idea of the total ascent of this walk but my legs tell me it's quite a bit. The views along the way are spectacular. The Howgills to the east, the Lake District peaks to the west and Morcambe Bay and Blackpool Tower to the south. There is no ascents to speak of after Whinfell Beacon and we go east down to the repeater station and continue down to Borrow Beck. We then turn north west and follow the beck all the way along the valley back to Huck's Bridge. A wonderful walk, lots of variation of terrain, some lovely wooded areas and open fells. There is every chance some sections will be muddy. Where we go for refreshment at the end of the day, I'm not too sure, I'll investigate the Shap Wells Hotel.

I doubt you could find a better way to spend Easter Sunday.
