This is a generally level walk which explores the footpaths and lanes to the south of Haltwhistle.

It follows stretches of the South Tyne, visits a family war memorial, has two castles and covers a short stretch of the Pennine Way.

It is likely to be muddy in parts.

  Clocks Back 1 Hour

A walk with different  views and panorama that change along the  path -     we start with a walk along the Roman  Wall dropping down into the Irthing Valley  crossing the river leads us to Gilsland where we skirt round the back of the village  past the Pollross Burn milecastle into Northumbria and onwards to Thirwell Castle ruin . From here it is a fairly steep   climb up to Walltown quarry where we will take lunch. Some steep up and downs along the Roman Wall will lead us to  Cawfields where we pick up the Haltwhistle burn ( beck) which we follow  through a  lovely wooded ravine past limestone kilns and the old brick works into Haltwhistle - this is a wooded ravine which should give us some  spectacular colours this time of year , and the weather  outlook for next Sunday as I write  this is sunny and cool

A nice easy, pleasant walk in the Haltwhistle area.

We set off from Haltwhistle and cross over the South Tyne and join

The River Tyne Trail as far as Broomhouse, passing Bellister Castle (remains of) on the way. At Broomhouse we join the South Tyne Trail, the old railway line.

We stay on the South Tyne Trail as far as Park Village where we go east for

a few miles towards Ramshaw Fell.

We turn north over Broomhouse Common and rejoin the South Tyne Trail

again which takes us back to Haltwhistle.

A mixture of riverside paths, woodland paths and open fells.

A nice gentle walk, a total of 560 feet of ascent, which shall be done at

a very leisurely pace.
