A Walk

Jopplety How - Kings How - Borrowdale

6 Miles Grade 3

Leader: David Bulman

Sands 9.15am

Not having walked on one of the Wednesday walks let alone led one I hope this walk is what is expected - although I suspect these fells are well known and liked by club members?

We can park at High Lodore Farm just before the Borrowdale Hotel where parking is free so long as we use the café at the end of the walk. We walk about a quarter of a mile along the road footpath before taking a path past Troutdale Cottages to start the climb up to Kings How which will take about an hour and is fairly steep on well formed paths towards the top. After that the hard work is done.We then drop a little before rising to Brund Fell and Jopplety How. Then it is downhill to Watendlath and the lovely walk alongside Watendlath Beck before dropping down to the start and refreshments. There will be some boggy sections but as long as boots are water proof you should not go over the tops. Rest stops can be taken wherever we want but suggest Brund Fell and Watendlath - one for the views and the other simply because it is a special place.

For those who have not walked with me before you should know I will be walking with my two dogs - they are friendly controlled and experienced fell walkers but I appreciate not everyone agrees or likes dogs so I thought it only fair to let you know so you can make your own individual decision on the matter.

Start - Culgaith NY 607 296 (OL 19)

Hi all
this our second attempt with this walk originally planned for Wednesday 07/02/18 but cancelled due to poor weather conditions. Now we have seen off 'The Beast from the East' we will try again

. It is  a lovely, scenic walk that visits the two iconic Eden Valley villages of Culgaith and Temple Sowerby and also takes in the grounds of Acorn Bank. History tells us that there has been a mill here for centuries although the house itself is only 150 years old. We originally planned to lead this walk during one of the flower seasons. The House gardens are full of either snowdrops, bluebells, or daffodils at the right time of year,  and despite any slowing down of nature  it looks like we should be lucky with the daffodils.  The views of the snow capped Pennines  can be quite stunning in the winter sun. So fingers crossed.

Now for the disclaimers:

  1. there will be an unavoidable degree of road walking in patches, but almost all on quiet country lanes and never for more than 1/2 -3/4 miles.
  2. As always we aim for a 'Stylish' walk and it becomes quite stylish during the center part of the ramble.

Look forward to seeing you on the day.
