A Walk
Place Fell - High Dodd
9.5 Miles Grade 2
Leader: Alan Dobson
The walk begins at the main crossroads junction in Cliburn. After leaving the village it traverses field paths and tracks with open views across the Eden Valley towards the North Pennines. It then rises up into Whinfell Forest and follows woodland paths around the Centre Parcs Holiday Village to reach the high point of Leacet Hill with panoramic views across the Leith and Eden Valleys to the south and west. The walk descends via the Cliburn Moss Nature Reserve to the Leith Valley. It then returns to Cliburn via the bank of the River Leith.
I recce'd this walk yesterday (18th October, 2017) in perfect weather and the conditions underfoot were surprisingly good - I can't promise the same on the day.

B Walk
Patterdale - Place Fell - Sandwick
8.5 Miles Grade 2
Leader: John French
X
The B walk starts from Patterdale with a fairly sharp climb up to
Boredale Hause. From there, we take the gentler path up to Place fell
with great views of Ullswater and Helvelyn, then downhill around
the base of High Dodd
From there, it’s left along the shores of Ullswater and the lower slopes
of Place Fell. Once we reach Silver Bay, we then have a short climb
to the higher path parallel to the lake leading to an old quarry and eventually back to Patterdale
Lunch probably at Scalehow Force or Silver bay depending on time
It’s a great walk with lots of variety with climbs, descents, waterfalls,
old quarries and great views of Ullswater

This Sunday both A and B walks go up place Fell , the A walk is slightly longer as we go up High Dodd as well and then trek back along the lakeside path known as the Coffin Track which winds its way along the lakeside , it is a little rough in places and there are several slight gradients to climb - Wainwright described it as one of his favourite Lakeland walks . The climb up Place Fell is quite gradual with a steeper ending the peak is just over 2000 feet , however the views are quite spectacular and plentiful as soon as we start the ascent , Place Fell itself is one of those fells where you think you are the top and there is a bit more to climb as you turn the corner and the decent can be a little boggy in places but I suppose that's normal with any walk due to the wet conditions we have encountered lately
