B Walk

Moffat & Upper Annandale

8.5  Miles Grade 3

Walk Leader: Ken Halliday

Coach Walk-Rosehill:8.50-Sands:9.00am

This is a straightforward, attractive walk on a mix of quiet roads, farm tracks, fields and pastures.  Leaving Moffat town centre, we walk east to the A708 road, and on leaving the town take the lane past Frenchland farm to the edge of the wood beneath the Moffat Hills.  Leaving the wood, we cross fields in a north-westerly direction, reaching a minor road at Archbank farm.  A short diversion from our route will take us to Moffat Well, a major tourist attraction in Victorian times.  Sampling the sulfur-rich water is entirely optional!

Resuming our route, we travel northwards past Gallow Hill, across fields and pastureland between the woods to our east and the now felled Archbank Belt, with the ominous Devil's Beeftub ahead of us!  Dropping down to the west we join the Annandale Way south of the ruins of Granton House and follow it back to Moffat, at first on a quiet road and then by riverside path.  A choice of watering holes awaits us, including the legendary Rumblin Tum!

In view of the recent interesting weather events, there will be some mud, but no worse than Grade 3 or 4 on the Graham Bell Mud Scale.

A Walk

Swatte Fell (2395ft)

10.5 Miles Grade 1

Leader: Phil Howarth

Coach Walk-Rosehill:8.50-Sands:9.00am

The walk will start in Moffat and proceed in an anti-clockwise direction.  We will follow the Well Road to Blaebeck and from there the track through the forestry plantation.  We then head towards Birnock Cloves directly south of the fell summit.  From the fell top we will return via Blue Cairn, Greygillhead and the Gallow Hill.  I am aiming to be back in Moffat by 4:15pm for refreshments for pick up on the coach by 5pm.

C Walk

Moffat Area

7 Miles Grade 4

Walk Leader: John McKay

Coach Walk-Rosehill:8.50-Sands:9.00am

Seven miles, perhaps a little bit longer than the usual C walk but nice and flat. Simple really, we start off 7 miles north of Moffat and go 7 miles south. A nice mixture of open fells, woodland, riverside paths and a little bit of minor road walking. Along the way we pass the Devil’s Beef Tub and use several stretches of the Annandale Way. A delightful walk and we have the Rumblin Tum to look forward to.

This is an "off the shelf" replacement for Judy's walk around Sebergham and Rose Castle.

We will walk from Brampton to Brampton Old Church before heading north to join the Hadrians Wall Path near Walton.

We follow the Hadrians Wall Path as far as Haytongate then head to Lanercost Prriory and lunch on the picnic tables by the bridge.

From Lanercost we follow Quarry Beck to Boothby and return to Brampton via Brampton Ridge and the Mote.

There's a strong possibility it will be muddy.
