Sunday 30th June 2019 - Coach Walk - Rosehill: 8.50am - Sands: 9.00am

Starting from Appleby we’ll have to do a short stretch of road walking to get to the village of Murton where the walk proper starts. From Murton we make a short steep ascent onto Murton Pike then cross open moorland heading for the rightly famous High Cup Nick. The approach from this direction gives a dramatic view of the unique geological feature, a combination of glaciation and the Whin Sill igneous intrusion. We’ll traverse the southern edge of the scar high above High Cup Gill. The scar is formed by a near-horizontal outcrop of the Whin Sill that underlies much of the North Pennines including long sections of Hadrian’s Wall. Tumbled blocks of this rock are scattered down the slopes beneath the scar. After taking in the views we’ll follow the Pennine way along the northern edge of the scar looking out for a pinnacle of rock known as Nichol's Chair after a local shoe maker who, for a bet, is said to have practiced his craft perched on its summit (but it could just be a load of cobblers).

The Pennine way will lead us down into the pretty village of Dufton where the coach will collect us.

A walk over typical North Pennine terrain, nothing too steep but with some long steady pulls. Boggy in parts but mostly on good paths. A must for anyone who hasn’t visited High Cup Nick.

Haystacks from Gatesgarth

7 Miles Grade 2/3

Leader: Sue Greenwood

Good paths by the side of Fleetwith Pike, then crossing over towards Haystacks. Just steady upwards trending scenic route, thinking of Wainwright. Lunch on top with spectacular views and no thunder. Care at the top of the path down to Scarth Gap, then descending by the stony way back to the cars at Gatesgarth Car Park. (maybe £3.00). Coffee/ice cream  at the van there or back to Buttermere “Fish”.

Steady pace ,as always, time to enjoy the day.

We get off the coach about a mile or so north of Appleby at

Stock Bridge and head off north on the footpath to Dufton.

We go round the side of Dufton through Dufton Ghyll Wood

and enter the village on the north side. “The Post Box Pantry”

should be open so there is a good chance that we will have a coffee stop before we leave Dufton.

We head south east on “The Pennine Journey” path

to Castle Hill which will probably be our lunch stop.

After lunch we go south through Flakebridge Wood to Black Hill and continue south on our Pennine Journey and with a bit of luck we should arrive in Appleby in ample time for tea, coffee, cake etc before heading home.

A gentle walk in lovely countryside

John

A pleasant 8 mile country walk through fields and the hamlets of Hoff, Little and Great Ormside, steeped in history and clothed in wild flowers.  Expect stiles, nettles and wonderful views of undulating hills, drumlins from ancient glaciers, High Cup Nick and Wild Boar Fell.  Criss-crossing the Eden Way and Lady Anne Clifford’s Way and the waters of Hoff Beck, Helm Beck and the River Eden.

And some clay-like mud in a former tile-manufacturing area
