A Walk

Melkinthorpe to Appleby

10 Miles Grade 3

Leader: Graham Bell

Geoff is unable to lead the scheduled walk so I will be leading an alternative on the eastern fringe of our walking area from Haltwhistle.

This is a beautiful and varied 9 mile walk in the South Tyne Valley along the banks of the riiver, through woods and farmland, with views of old castles. Though easy walking it is fairly long and it will be muddy in parts.

After recceing my planned walk from Hackthorpe to Dufton I decided it was a little ambitious in the time allowed. (I also wasn't sure if the tea shop in Dufton would be open!!!).

The walk will now take a route from Melkinthorpe to Appleby following the field footpaths and tracks that join the former Westmorland villages of Melkinthorpe, Great Strickland, Morland, Bolton and Long Marton to the former county town of Appleby.

A pleasant ramble that mostly follows riverside paths and minor roads. From Appleby the walk follows the river Eden to the small village of Great Ormside. Here we’ll visit the ancient church, which overlooks the Ormside Viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle railway line and is the location for several important archaeological finds. We’ll then take a minor road and field paths to visit Rutter Force a small but impressive waterfall in a picturesque setting. The rest of the walk follows the River Hoff back to Appleby. There are some muddy sections but nothing that should detract from a fine early spring walk.

Due to erosion of the river bank between Appleby and Great Ormside, which I don't think suitable for C walkers, the walk will now start at Dufton (toilets) and continue via Flakebridge wood back to Appleby. As this route is quite a bit shorter than the planned walk, depending on the weather and state of the riverside path we can take a short stroll from Jubilee bridge, then return and walk to the castle entrance and down the main street for refreshment.
