This Weeks Walks
Coach Walk:Rosehill:8.50am-Sands:9.00am
Coach Walk:Rosehill:8.50am-Sands:9.00am
After leaving the coach at Ambleside there is a fairly steep climb on a good track on to the southern edge of Loughrigg Fell. This is the only steep climb of the day - hence the 2/3 grading.
The track is followed in a westerly direction as far as Skelwith Bridge where we join the Cumbria Way via Low Colwith and High Arnside to reach Tarn How's.
The descent from Tarn Hows takes us down to Monk Coniston and we rejoin the Cumbria Way for the final part of the walk in to Coniston.

Sunday 1st September 2019 - Coach Walk - Rosehill: 8.50am - Sands: 9.00am
Starting from Yewdale, a couple of miles from Coniston, we’ll need to make a quick decant from the coach into the NT car park at Glen Mary Bridge. From here the walk takes a quiet lane to Tilberthwaite quarries then climbs above the south side of Tilberthwaite Gill on a narrow rising path alongside the extensive slate quarries and with several entrances to old copper mines along the way.
Crossing the top of the beck the path begins to climb more steeply heading for the start of Wetherlam edge a fine airy route that leads almost directly to the summit at 2502 ft. This will probably be lunch and then we’ll descend to the hause below Swirl How. From here it’s an easy descent down to Levers water and on into Coniston or if weather and time permits we may opt to add Swirl How, Brim Fell and Coniston Old Man which would make it a great a day in the hills.

From the B5292 Whinlatter Pass road we set off from the "Ice Cream Van" lay by overlooking Bassenthwaite Lake (GR 223245, alternative parking available nearby in the forest). After a short length of road walking we enter the forest and gently ascent to the Visitor Centre for a coffee break. We continue upwards to the top of the forest, from the where a short ascent takes to the top of Lord's Seat, the main summit of the walk and probable lunch stop. A descent eastwards, slightly steep and rocky in places, takes us to Barf, another splendid viewpoint. We then re-enter the forest and tracks take us back to the start.
Although much of the walk is in the Whinlatter Forest there are plenty of open areas to enjoy the views, particularly looking towards Skiddaw and Helvellyn.
Because of the number of tracks in the forest there is scope for amending the walk, the planned one is about 7.5 miles long with 1800 feet of ascent.
Good paths throughout
