A Walk

Wandhope via Addicomb Hole

7 Miles Grade 1/2

Leader: Pete Rutland

Coach Walk-Rosehill:8.50-Sands:9.00am

Another short A walk and to the summit of a pretty ordinary fell you might say. But read on before you abandon this one. From Buttermere we take the long walk up the valley above Mill Beck that evolves into Sail Beck. This valley alone is worth a look. We arrive at Addacomb Beck and look up to our left (West) and then we begin to understand what this walk is all about. No longer does Wandhope look like the flat mundane hill that we most often see from Grasmoor or Wandhope Moss but you might start to think what have I let myself in for. ( If the forecast looks frosty or its icy , you will need some sort of spiked footwear, hopefully boots will be adequate). We then head up to tackle Addacomb ridge that goes above Addacomb Hole. Wainwright describes this as the best glacial bowl in the Lakes. The steep ridge will take us to the top of Wandhope and probably lunch and a well earned rest. The views off Wandhope are very good. Our descent is down over Whiteless Edge and up Whitelss Pike before dropping us back down to Buttermere and tea and buns. I have factored Wandhope into many club walks over the years but in my memory we have not been up Addacomb Ridge so might be a first for anyone doing this walk. Two Wainwrights to be bagged, good paths, some very steep stuff but nothing you could class as scrambling.( From Wandhope Crag Fell appears to be just sitting there waiting to be bagged. I think this is a hill we have all done at least once and it is not my intention to go up it, time could be against us in any case). This walk is mainly about the challenge of the Ridge and seeing Addacomb Hole. In the programme the walk is shown as a Gd1, but in terms of height gained it is actually a Gd 2. It will feel like a Gd 1 heading up the ridge but I dont think any of this really matters.

Be there or be Square. Pete.

This will be a straightforward but very beautiful walk which includes many splendid viewpoints.

We leave the coach at Lanthwaite Green Farm from where we walk back along the road a short distance and take the path near Lanthwaite Gate eventually arriving at the top of Brackenthwaite Hows (208 m). From here we make our way to the northern end of Crummock Water from where we follow the lakeside for a mile. Here we branch off to the South East and skirt the North East flank of Rannerdale Knotts. We will then climb ¾ mile to the summit of Rannerdale Knotts (355 m) and admire the wonderful views (weather permitting). After retracing our steps, we bear South West to reach Buttermere Village. As this is a fairly short B walk, there may be time to walk down to Buttermere Lake (or even indulge in 2 pieces of cake).

Roger

Geoff is unable to lead the walk to Lords Seat as shown on the programme so I am leading an alternative walk.

Parking at Hesket New Market we follow field footpaths south to Wood Hall from where we continue over rough pasture with an awkward beck crossing to Calebreck.

From there we head north to Scalerigg House before returning to Hesket New Market via Haltcliffe and Stott Ghyll.
