A Walk
Lonscale Fell
9 Miles Grade 1
Leader: Phil Howarth
What better way to start the new year than by doing one of the Lakes iconic hills, Helm Crag. From the road side parking (free) on the A591 at Grasmere we do a very short bit of roadside walking (North), but quickly cut across fields to Helmside. This gives us access to the hillside and onto Steel Fell. A longish but progressive climb rather than steep takes us to the summit(553m). There is still some uphill to do on this walk but most of the hard stuff is now behind us.
We then head in a Westerly direction and over to Calf Crag, usually the lunch stop. There is then a great route taking us to Gibson Knott and finally onto Helm Crag. A hill top full of features and if the jets happen to fly by the best place to view them from. Its then down to Grasmere and tea and buns if somewhere is open. For those not familiar with this walk and want to know how painful it is, it lays somewhere between an A and B walk. The walking is all on good paths, could be the odd boggy bit at this time of year, no scrambling (unless you want to go up the Howitzer) with great views all around. Four Wainwrights to bag. All in all a great way to start your hiking year.
Be there or be square.

Coach Walk:Rosehill:8.50am Sands:9.00am
From Booth's car park we'll head towards Fitz Park and Briar Rigg before crossing the A66 footbridge. Then we'll follow the Cumbria Way to emerge at the lower slopes of Lonscale Fell, heading east for 1 km before turning due north towards Skiddaw House but 700m short of there doubling back to join the Burnt Horse ridge. We then follow the fence to the summit of Lonscale Fell (715m), head due west for a short distance to find the path alongside Whit Beck for the descent. That will bring us to the Cumbria Way again and if there is time we can ascend Latrigg on the way back and return to Keswick via the road bridge over the A66 near Forge Brow.

Coach Walk:Rosehill:8.50am Sands:9.00am
Not much to say about this walk apart from we will set off and walk around Derwentwater walking through Portinscale first and coming back into Keswick via the Theatre by the Lake, this is a very scenic walk and hopefully the weather will be good to allow great views of the surrounding fells.
