A Walk

Pillar - Red Pike from Wasdale

9 Miles Grade 1

Leader: Pete Rutland

MEETING AT SANDS 08.30am

A couple of details to mention first. In the programme todays walk is shown as Blencathra, this is a printing error and it was always my intention to do Pillar. Having said that should the weather be at all bad I have no intention in going all the way down to Wasdale to walk around in the rain all day. So please keep an eye on the weather and any changes on the Website. If in doubt my number is 07534 358550.

An early start from the Sands for what will be a longish day but a great hike. From Wasdale Head we take the path due North under Kirk Fell to pick up Black Sail Pass. We then go West over Looking Stead and head toward Pillar, this is a longish track to the summit. Great views from here which makes it one of many peoples favourite hills.

We then head down the path to Wind Gap. When reaching the path that takes us along to Red Pike we can, if people want to shoot over and take in Scoat Fell. From there its nothing to pop over to Steeple which is a brilliant mountain. This will only be an add on if everyone wants to but these two hills are a gift for little effort. Either way its then down via Red Pike to Dore Head. Its then along under the western slopes of Yewbarrow to the road and back to Wasdale Head.

Dinner where we feel on the day, after hike refreshments in the Inn.

Hope the weather is kind on the day as this is a great hill day……

Be there or be square.

Pete

Sunday 6th May 2018 - Coach Walk: Rosehill: 8.50am - Sands: 9.00am

We will leave the bus at the bus stop opposite Parton and then make our way along the old waggonway to the Whitehaven docks from there we make our way up to the candlestick and up onto the cliff top. We will walk past Haig Pit and on to Birbecks Quarry were time and weather permitting we will stop for a coffee break.

After this break we will head towards Fleswick Bay for lunch, and weather permitting some spectacular views, after lunch we will climb back up onto the cliff top and on to St. Bees for refreshments.

This walk will be 9.5 to 10 miles and more of a grade 3 with nothing to strenuous and some of the B walkers will not find this walk to difficult and it will be done at a leisurely pace due to the fact the views on a good day are fantastic with plenty of spots to take photos, the paths are very good after some recent work done round the quarry and Fleswick Bay due to the fact this walk is also part of the Cumbria Coastal  Way (I think)

B Walk

Moor Row to St Bees

8 Miles Grade 3

Leader: John McKay

Sunday 6th May 2018

A Walk

Parton to St Bees

11  Miles Grade 3

Leader: Stephen Parker

We set off from the Wainwright Monument in  Moor Row, If you’re going to erect a monument to someone it might as well be Wainwright. Who knows, perhaps one day there will be a McKay Monument. We go west along some footpaths to Stanley Pond and it’s quite likely some of them will be muddy. We continue east through Sandwith and on to the St Bees Lighthouse where we pick up the coastal path to St Bees. Lunch at Fleswick Bay, where we may encounter the A party,  then back up on to the cliff tops for a gentle walk to St Bees. Nice views along the way and lots of birds for the twitchers to enjoy.

I will not promise an amazing forecast this time since we wore water proofs until 1pm on my last walk! However, it will still be a stunning walk, with a bit of practice steepness before the real short steep climb up Gray Crag, on a reasonable track. Nice easy ridge fell walking on the top, a bit of crossing over to the Col , missing out Thornthwaite and down lots of steps by Pasture Beck back to Hartsop, with a short road walk to the cars at Cow Bridge.

Took me about 5 hours at my snail pace.

Hope we get a good day!

Sue

Starting from beach car park at the coast to coast sign we ascend the short incline to the top of the cliffs where a sea breeze should be blowing and the seabirds nesting on the cliffs below.

The lighthouse is soon reached and as we pass the coves and creeks below us a range of spring flowers will catch the eye, part of natures rock garden.

As we approach Whitehaven the Candle Stick and Beacon will come into view, bringing to and end a bracing walk.
