B Walk

Cumrew Fell

9.5 Miles Grade 2/3

Walk Leader: Ian Rowley

Car Walk-Sands:9.00am

A walk close to home and in country familiar to many Thursday evening walkers, however despite it’s length and modest height a fairly tough b walk following muddy and often wet tracks with a short trackless section over heather clad moorland. The walk starts from Jockey Shield (GR 557 555 )  a little east of Castle Carrock  where there is plenty of parking.  We descend to the river Gelt (the “mad” river) then pick up a well made track to the location of the Gairs coal mine. From here another well made but more muddy track leads us towards the confluence of “Old water” and “New water” which combine to form the Gelt. We then cross through the treeless Kings Forest of Gelt before a short climb that opens up views across the upper Eden valley to the Lakeland fells. We make the climb onto Cumrew fell with a detour onto Cardunnock Pike with its impressive stone covered pre-historic burial mound. After crossing to the end of the Cumrew fell we’ll pick our way across trackless heather moors, no doubt disturbing plenty of Red Grouse that (briefly) inhabit this shooting moor. A final short section of road returns us to our cars.

Grasmere Corpse Trail - Rydal Round

7 Miles Grade 3

Leader: Janet Nicholson

Sands: 9.15am

Parking if making own way.  Layby just outside Grasmere on main road or plenty of parking in Grasmere.

Walk will commence by meeting outside Gingerbread shop in centre of Grasmere.  Once all assembled (those from Sands and those freewheeling) we will set off past the garden centre to follow the lane leading to turning for waters edge.  We will follow Grasmere and then Rydal lakes before crossing the road by the Badgers pub.  Tea and pee stop or even lunch at Rydal Mount before heading a short way uphill to pick up the coffin trail back to Grasmere.

Depending on group can take a wander up to Alcock Tarn on way back.

Distance 6/7 miles.

Parking at Scawgill Bridge we walk back into Thornthwaite forest, then track around the northern perimiter onto Lord’s Seat. Depending on the wind direction we may get some shelter here for a cuppa.  Then onto Barf before heading back into Thornthwaite Forest. We can add a short climb to Seat How, or skirt around it before negotiating our way along the tracks onto Whinlatter and a straight forward descent back into the forest.  This walk only just constitutes an A walk, but includes three Wainwrights.
