B Walk

Gilsland Area

8 Miles Grade 3

Leader: Stephen Parker

We will park in the car park at Gilsland (beside the school) and follow the path to Birdoswald and from there onto Gilsland Spa, from there we will visit the  sulphur well and the river crossing. After some field walking we will arrive at our choice of lunch stop, either Thirwell Castle or the café of Greenhead (or both depending on the weather 😊), from there it is some more field walking back to Gilsland and refreshments.

A nice leisurely 8/9 mile walk with nothing to strenuous.

B Walk

Great Ormside - Rutter Force from Appleby

9.5 Miles Grade 4

Leader: Pauline Goodridge

Sands: 9.15am

Meeting Point:  Chapel Street car park with toilets (parking fee £3.30) CA16 6UZ  (Also called Broad Close car park)

This is a pleasant lowland, pastoral walk with some gentle rises.  We follow the River Eden south from Appleby to Great Ormside, passing under the Settle-Carlisle railway.  We see Helm Beck briefly before passing under the railway again. From here we turn west, passing through fields with livestock up to the highest point of the walk at 210 metres where there are views east to the Pennines to eventually join the Hoff Beck valley and Rutter Force.  The beck is followed to Bandley pedestrian Bridge which is crossed to head north-east over a steeper rise back into Appleby.

There are three features of interest on the walk.  The first is the Eden Benchmark, the Primrose Stone, at Bongate Mill in Appleby.  The second is the Cross tree, a Sycamore, at Great Ormside, dating from 1693 and the third is Rutter Force and Mill.  You might just see a heron or two, a red squirrel and some mushrooms if you are lucky !  There are some slippery parts to the path mainly beside the River Eden so please bring poles.  There are also numerous stiles.

Firstly there is conflict between the programme and what is on the Website. Sorry for any confusion or disappointment for anyone wanting to do Beda Fell but the walk is as above. Secondly, although this is shown as a Gd 2 it is a toughish walk.

We set off from the Brothers water car park, which, if I remember correctly is an honesty box. Theres a good flat walk taking us along the Lake and onto the ascent of HIGH HARTSOP DODD. This is a bit of a pull up here, we continue on to take in the summit of LITTLE HART CRAG. We drop down and cross the Scandale Pass path. This is where it may not be everyones cup of tea, coffee or even jelly baby. We head over to MIDDLE DODD. This is a short leg but there is no path. The ground is ok and not that difficult to negotiate but you have been warned.

Back on tracks again its a short hike to the top of RED SCREES,776m. We then drop down to the Kirkstone Pass via Kilnshaw Chimney. Here again it way not be to everyones liking. Its a good but steep path but with a little care shouldn’t give anyone a problem. From there its a long walk back passing the Kirkstone along Kirkstone Beck. (path, not on the road). Dinner somewhere on route, four good tops and good views. As I said some tough bits mainly on good paths but nothing to serious.

Be there or be Square. Pete.

Car Walk: Sands:9.00am

We will park at Patterdale -usually  find free parking but failing   that we can park at the pub car park and they will reimburse the cost if we get refreshments there at the end of the walk , Th path up Place Fell climbs slowly at first the gets steeper as we reach the top . on a clear day the views are spectacular , there is a slight scramble near the top which can be avoided . From the summit  2168 feet the path descends down to the sheep pens then a rise up to  High Dodd then a flat  plateau walk until we descend steeply down and pick up the  coffin path -part of the Ullswater Way which leads back to Patterdale - this path is a little rough in places with some ascends and drops so all the hard work isn't quite finished
