Muncaster Fell 9 miles (or six if you want a ride on the Ratty!) Grade 3

Starting from Ravenglass the walk visits the Roman bath house remains then heads across country up to Muncaster Castle. Entering the grounds of the castle (but taking care not to stray from the footpath) we’ll then cross the A695 for an easy climb up to the top of Muncaster Fell following the line of the roman road that linked Ravenglass with Hardknott fort. A modest 750 feet in height but with extensive views especially towards the Sca Fell range. After a short, possibly boggy, crossing of the fell we’ll drop down to our lunch stop aproximately five miles into the walk. After lunch any one who wishes to shorten the day and return to Ravenglass on the Laal Ratty can make a short detour to Eskdale Green Station. I will supply a map with directions and timetable. You can pay at the station or on the train and the fare is £5.50 for adults and half price for children.

For those not taking this option it’s an easy four or five miles following the base of the fell back to Muncaster Castle then on down to Ravenglass. Should be a grand day out for children of all ages!

C Walk

Ravenglass Area

6 Miles Grade 4

Leader: John McKay

Coach Walk-Sands: 9.00am

We go south from Ravenglass for about a mile to the Roman Bath House and after a quick dip we carry on south before turning east for Muncaster Castle. We negotiate our way through the castle grounds emerging on the A595 which we walk along for a few hundred yards before turning north on the footpath which will take us to the lovely Muncaster Tarn, a lovely little spot where we will have lunch. I did intend doing a bit of “Off Piste” at this point but after doing a recce I decided that some of you may not be too keen on climbing walls and fighting your way through thick trees. Reluctantly, we retrace our steps for a short distance and turn north for Muncaster Mill. On reaching the mill some of you may feel that you’ve had enough, if so, you can catch “La’al Ratty” back to Ravenglass. If you feel up to it, or are just too tight to pay the train fare then we go south for the last couple of miles back to Ravenglass. A lovely little walk which will be done at a very leisurely pace. About 6 miles, a few little gradients but nothing serious.
