For anyone not away on holiday, a lovely climb up to Blake Fell with amazing views all round, and a slightly steep descent back to Loweswater.  I shall use both sticks. Parking down the Lane marked “HIGH NOOK FARM”, just up the road to Mockerkin from the Kirk Style Inn. May not be quite 7 miles but who knows!

See you.

B Walk

Great & Little Mell Fell

7 Miles Grade 2

Leader: Malcolm Iredale

A modest length walk on a mixture of footpaths and quiet roads, glorious views and two Wainwright Fells for badge collectors – all in a (relatively!!?) quiet corner of the Lakes = the ultimate Easter Sunday ramble? Mind you, there are a few stiles, and some wet patches and probably some April showers!
We park at Brownrigg Farm on the Matterdale End Road – accepting that there are a limited number of spaces, and, turning our back on Great Mell Fell, we head towards Little Mell Fell  around the farm and across the ( sorry – rather soggy!!) valley to Greenrow. We join a fairly quiet country road to Lowthwaite before branching onto the track to The Hause and the (short) climb up Little Mell Fell – a modest 1,657ft . Despite the lack of absolute height, the summit provides a great panorama of The Eden Valley, Penrith and Ullswater and surrounding fells.
We drop ( short & sharp!) from the summit to a green (wet!) lane which leads onto the quiet Thackthwaite Road which we follow back to Greenah to re join the path we set out on. Now we head onwards and upwards to Great Mell Fell – with the ability to stop off at the cars for the feint hearted!!
Great Mell Fell – 1,760ft - is only slightly higher than our previous climb, and again affords great views towards Threlkeld and Blencathra. It is a short, simple climbwhere the preferred route involves some circumnavigation before the final ascent – but this is weather dependent as the path can be a tad damp. As we traverse the summit on our return we may be lucky to see some of the wild white ponies that inhabit the hill.
Given the modest length of the walk we will have ample time to sample the delights of the nearby Cocklakes Tea Rooms – well recommended. This is a relatively easy ramble which incorporates two fell tops – so seems to do what it says on the Club Tin!!.

A change in the program for this  Sunday  with a   lovely walk from Paterdale up Close Fell for Easter Sunday , there is usually areas to park free in Patterdale however this  is Easter Sunday so it might bea little harder but we will see how it goes - there are free toilets on route to the start .  The path climbs steadily and soon opens up to some splendid views , at the half way point the climb becomes a little steeper as the path zigzags to the summit , there is a slight scramble near the summit which can be avoided , from the summit we then drop down past  small pools of peaty water and head toward the sheep fold where we will have lunch and it doubles up as a toilet stop , then its a steady climb over High Dodd and a rather steep  decent to the coffin path  which leads us back round the lake to Patterdale - note this is quite a  rough path  which was one of wainwrights  favourites
