The Fairfield horseshoe is one of the classics. On a clear day we should be rewarded with fine views overlooking much of the Lakelands. As distance goes it’s not excessively far, just over 10 miles. We will start from Ambleside and head to Rydal Hall. The path zigzags up the slope to the top of the Nab Scar. The views begin to appear as we make the steep ascent. The path becomes clear as we continue up to Herron Pike and the route to Fairfield becomes obvious. The summit of Fairfield is quite flat but has lots of cairns which will hopefully make an ideal spot for lunch as we will by then be halfway round. We head back down a rocky path towards Dove Crag continuing on to High Pike and Low Pike. Much of this descent will be following a wall. Between High Brock Crag and Low Brock Crag there is a down climb ‘bad step’ which can be avoided by taking an easy short down scramble. We’ll continue down to Low Sweden bridge and by Nook End farm to return to Ambleside. This a dog friendly walk too.

Hi Folks.

Our walk for the 12th is relatively easy but with spectacular views of the River South Tyne, The Viaduct and Featherstone Castle.  Nice dismantled railway track a lot of the way so bags of opportunities for walking and talking!

Meet at Thorneyhole Wood CarPark Ordnance Survey OL43 595 679 around 10.00 or The Sands at 09.15.

Contrary to rumours I put about that I was going woodworking and Cherry Caulthard would be leading.   I'm afraid it's me after all as Cherry has put her back out and unable to go on the Club Holiday or lead the walk for me.  All the best Cherry and see you soon. Xxxx

Sands 9.15am
This will be slightly shorter than advertised at 8.5 miles. All flat and following the river Eden from Appleby to Great Ormside whch is a  hidden gem of the Eden valley especially it’s ancient church which we’ll visit en-route.
From the village a mix of quiet lanes and field paths takes us to the impressive Rutter Force and our lunch stop.
From here it’s more riverside rambling along the Hoff Beck (named after the star of Knight Rider and a German lager)
We’ll finally return to Appleby after climbing more stiles than it is possible to count!  Autumn colour, river bank scenery, an old church and a fine viaduct – what more could you want ?
(apart from fewer stiles)
