A Walk

Coledale Horseshoe

8 Miles Grade 1scr

Leader: Roger Tringham

Sands Centre 9.15 Parking in Haltwhistle: Willia Rd NE49 9EH

A walk with quite a bit of historical interest, from Stanegate, the Vallum & Hadrian's wall to a 19th century Industrial chimney . Haltwhistle Burn is also a good place to spot bird life.
A circular walk, starting along Haltwhistle Burn, crossing the burn just below the car park and walking uphill across a number of fields to Hallpeat Moss ( be prepared for mud on the farm land, especially after all the recent rain!) From there to Hill Top and eventually to Winshields, crossing the B6318, with care. Reaching the Vallum and on up to Hadrian's Wall, we follow the wall westwards towards Cawfields. Recrossing the road we pick up the Haltwhistle Burn path, heading south back to the car park.

Don't forget your gaiters!

B Walk

Newlands Valley from Keswick

10.5 Miles Grade 3

Leader: Ian Rowley

Washed away bridges have meant some adjustments to the  route for this walk which as a result is bit more of a “there and back” walk than originally planned. This is a walk with lots of interest and given fair weather lots of spring time atmosphere.
Crossing the suspension bridge over the Derwent to Portinscales the first part of the walk follows the Cumbrian Way past  Nichol End marina and on through Fawe Wood before arriving at Skelgill. Here the mood of the walk changes as we follow a rough track under Catbells and on to Yewthwaite Mine. We’ll continue past Little town  (more of which later) entering  the higher reaches of Valley and walking as far as Goldscope mine which will be the turning point of the walk and lunch stop. A short detour from the path will let us visit the mine entrance and peer into it’s depths while trying out it’s fantastic echo echo echo echo.
On the return leg we’ll visit the pretty Newlands church and it’s fine showing of daffodils then through Little Town once home to the German miners who worked the local lead and silver and copper mines. Here we’ll pick up a rising field path that eventually returns us to Skelgill farm, from where we’ll retrace our steps back to Keswick.

6 Miles Grade 4

Leader: Madge Hamilton

Coach Walk: Rosehill 8.50am - Sands 9.00am

The bus will drop us and collect us at Braithwaite. The coledale round is one of the classics. We will do it anticlockwise, taking in Grisedale Pike, Hopegill head, Crag Hill and Sail. There may be occasional use of hands but it will be minimal. From there we take the straightforward path back to Braithwite, though if there is time we may take in Outerside and/or Barrow
