Off to bonnie Scotland for this walk and we set off from the National Trust (Scottish) car park. It’s quite a steep start as we make our way up alongside Tail Burn to the waterfall (Grey Mare’s Tail). The path levels off for quite a bit and eventually we round the bend to be greeted by the sight of the lovely Loch Skeen. We’ll have a short coffee stop at this point before heading off across what is normally a rather muddy section at the best of times and we make the steep ascent of Lochcrag Head. Weather permitting the views are fantastic. It’s nice to know that the climbing for the day is almost over as there is only one short steep section to come, the rest is fairly level walking. We follow the fence, keeping it on our right all the way round till we reach White Coomb, the high point of the day,821mtrs-2694ft. It’s now downhill all the way  and we come  across Tail Burn again, this could present a slight problem, depending on rainfall, it might be in full flow and we might have a problem finding a suitable place to cross but that’s all in the fun of walking. Having crossed the burn we rejoin the path which will take us back down to the car park. We can then head off to Moffat and the lovely Rumblin Tum Café for refreshment. A wonderful walk, quite steep in parts but we will take our time, I definitely will, the more energetic can race away if they want, you can’t lose your way on this walk, just keep the fence or wall on your right and you end up back where you started.

CHANGE OF PROGRAMME DUE TO EXCESSIVE WET VALLEY WALKING CONDITIONS

Although this change to the scheduled walk intends to avoid the seriously wet conditions experienced on recent Wednesday walks, parts will be soggy. This is a moderate walk of 4.5 miles
with some steep inclines and declines, starting out moderately.
Park in the area next to the bridge at Dockray. From the A66 at Troutbeck take the A5091 signposted Ullswater, 3.5 miles.

We will park in Bassenthwaite village and walk the minor road to Orthwaite. from there we follow a circular route anticlockwise via Brockle crag and Trusmador returning to Orthwaite from where we retrace our steps back to Bassenthwaite. I recce'd this in the summer and hope to do so again this week to make sure the recent bad weather hasn't affected the route
