A Walk

Whiteside & Whiteless Pike

9 Miles Grade 1

Leader: Pete Rutland

A lovely walk with great views over Grasmere, Rydal Water, and Windermere in the distance.
I plan to park on the A591 in a “free” layby  just outside Grasmere. Not the usual one on the right at the start of Grasmere but go another ½ mile to one on the left. From here we cross the road (carefully) and go through a wooden gate to the Millennium bridge. Cross the bridge and turn right to follow the path to the centre of Grasmere, turn left towards Sam Reads bookshop, the green and toilets.
From here we head for the drive to Allan Banks (once lived in by Wordsworth)  passing the house on the right before heading left leading to an old rocky path. After climbing steadily we come out onto open fell and keep climbing. Eventually the gradient eases off and we head right towards Brigstone Moss and Lang Howe Tarns with good views into Langdale. We turn left here for a few minutes before leaving the path to head back across to Silver Howe for lunch.
After lunch we start the steady descent down towards Dow Bank, then after another½ mile or so turn left and start heading back to Grasmere for coffee and cake in the Potting Shed cafe at the garden centre.

If you want to get up reasonably high on the fells at some stage this requires a bit of hard work. On this walk thats where it kicks off. We start from the car park at Lanthwaite Green, a short warm up across open land then straight up and up and up. This is hard work for about an hour and a bit, 30 seconds if you hire a helicopter. Don’t let this put you off this is a cracker of a walk and 90% of the hard work is done on this first bit. Up over Whin Ben to the summit of Whiteside (707m). There, all but cracked it.
Along the great ridge and onto Hopegill Head (707m). This route gives great views on good paths. We then drop down to Coledale Hause where it will probably be time for lunch. From there we head toward Wandhope Moss with the summit of Wandhope on our left. You can make out the cairn on what looks like a pointless top to visit unless your bagging Wainwrights. But as it takes less than 10 minutes with no real effort we will take the time to do it. Then, having got there the views across the valley are brilliant, its not a Wainwright for nothing.
We then head onto Whiteless Pike along Whiteless Edge. A short lovely route not at all dangerous. Down toward Buttermere then taking the path behind Rannerdale Knotts to the road and back to the cars. Hope you can make it for a walk that takes in 4 Wainwrights, great ridges and brilliant views.

Regards Pete…Be there or be square.

B Walk

Arthur's Seat & Loadpot Hill

9.5 Miles Grade 2

Leader: Heather Perrin

X

It’s a fairly big walk for a B walk but we can take our time – Granny Dowbekin’s doesn’t shut till 5.00!
Taking the A592 just past Rheged, go through Pooley Bridge, straight across the Howtown Rd and up to Roehead to park  GR 479 236.  We walk up to The Cockpit and then, crossing Eider Beck and then Aik Beck we start to ascend Barton Fell, gently and sweetly parallel with Ullswater with fabulous views.  A few cairns lead us to Arthur’s Pike – there is a beacon and then another cairn and then a real summit cairn.  From there, we head off due south for about two miles on a vague path (but clear enough to follow even during the deep mist of the day of the recce).  We skirt round the southern end of Loadpot Hill with the remains of Lowther House and from there turn north up to the trig point.  This is the highest point of the day at 672 metres.  From there we take the High Street path northwards towards Pooley Bridge and hopefully into Granny Dowbekin’s which has been totally refurbished – it is truly lovely!
