B Walk

Hesket Newmarket

9 Miles Grade 3

Leader: Graham Bell

This should be a relatively easy “ A” walk that might tempt a few “ B “ walkers as there are no really steep ascents or descents and most of the walking is on grassy paths or tracks.
Starting from Hesket Newmarket (not Caldbeck as advertised) the walk follows field paths and some cross country route finding to reach Scalebeck.
From here we follow one of many old mine tracks that criss-cross the Caldbeck fells into the valley of  Carrock beck. Passing under the shadow of Carrock fell we’ll cross the beck then make the only real climb of the day on to the ridge between Carrock Fell and High Pike.  We’ll then head to the top of High Pike, the most northerly lake district fell over 2000ft in time for lunch and hopefully views across the Solway and back towards the Pennines
From here it’s a leisurely descent down to Caldbeck village with  time  to look at some of the many old mine sites along the way. There should be plenty of time  to enjoy the tea rooms in Caldbeck and render a few choruses about the famous radio disc jockey “ Do Ye Ken John Peel?”

This traditional Christmas walk needs no introduction.

We will park in the car park at Legburthwaite at the southern end of St John's in the Vale (free parking until further notice).
From here we climb north to the top of Wren Crag with fine views (weather permitting) and on along the Long Band to the summit of High Rigg.
From here we descend to St John's Church before skirting southwards along the front of the fell to return to Legburthwaite.
Sadly Graham and Sarah at Low Bridge Farm are unable to provide us with the usual scrumptious Christmas tea.
The good news is that Jane a friend from Carlisle Ramblers Association will provide us with what I'm sure will be an equally scrumptious feast at Millbeck Parish Hall.
If you would like to attend and have not yet let me know please get in touch as soon as possible.

Graham

Sands: 9.15am

After leaving the coach at Hesket New Market we will head south following various footpaths to Wood  Hall and Calebreck before heading south to Heggle Lane and Sowerby Church  for our planned lunch stop.
After lunch we will head north west to Millhouse and the return to
our starting point.
On returning to Hesket New Market we will ask Chris to take us to the fleshpots of Caldbeck for refreshments.

Graham.

Today's walk follows the popular path to the old Bobbin Mill and the Waterfalls of Whelpo Beck.
After crossing a field a short section of road walking leads to Townhead. A lane known to some
As the (Dingley Dell) is then taken and terminates at a stretch of road leading down to Hesket  Newmarket, a path in the Village descends through woodland and fields to a small coppice where a short detour reveals the meeting of the Cald Beck and the River Caldew, quite a sight when in flood. Crossing a small iron bridge leads to easy walking through lower Parsons Park and  on to Caldbeck for a welcome cup of tea.
