Marie Curie Cancer Care's endurance UK mountain challenge event for 2014, the Scafell Pike Challenge will take place on Saturday 20th September. Take on the challenge of this famous but demanding long distance route and ascend England’s tallest mountain in just one day – a true achievement for any walker.
Where?
Scafell Pike (3,209 ft), Lake District National Park, Cumbria
How long is the route and how challenging?
Sitting proudly above all the other Peaks in the Lake District, it is a tough challenge to reach the summit. This challenge will take roughly 5 – 8 hours depending on your fitness. Travelling 11.5 miles and ascending to over 3,200ft this challenge will be rewarded you with stunning views of the throughout.
This mountain challenge is more suited to experienced hill/mountain walkers, the ever changing terrain and weather of the magnificent Southern Fells will not only test your stamina and capabilities, but will push you to your limits!
What level of fitness or special skills do I need to take part?
Training
Training is recommended for this event unless you are a seasoned long distance walker of course! 11.5 miles of walking may seem to be an achievable challenge for most people on the surface of it, but take into account the extremely varied terrain underfoot and the often changeable weather and you have a real challenge on your hands.
Skills
Whilst we provide a comprehensive written walk guide for this route, we always recommend participants to be suitably proficient in map reading skills and the use of a compass.
Can groups take part?
Absolutely! This walk is perfect for groups or individuals alike. If you, a group of friends, or the company you work for are looking for the next big challenge, a team building exercise, or simply want to do something out of the ordinary to raise money for a really worthwhile cause, then this event is for you.

This is the easy part! To register go to www.mariecurie.org.uk/uktreks and select Scafell Pike. It costs £15 to register and we ask each participant to aim to raise £125 or more in sponsorship.
