High Crag-High Stile-Red Pike Edge
This stunning walk is a Lake District Classic. The Edge is a fine ridge walk comprising the high fells standing over Buttermere. We alight the coach at Buttermere Village quarry (Map Reference NY172172 and head towards Burtness Wood, then taking the gradually ascending path up to Scarth Gap. From there we ascend High Crag, then continuing onto High Stile and finally Red Pike. The steep descent leads us back to the Village for tea/coffee or tipples.
Walk distance = 9 miles
Height of ascent = 2250 ft.

We get off the coach about a couple of miles south of Low Lorton. We’ll have to be quick, there is a slight wide section of road for the coach to stop but we are likely to hold up any traffic so be ready to get off quickly. We go on a bit of a wander along some nice footpaths, south then north then south again. I don’t think many of you will have been along these paths before, in fact I don’t think many people at all have been along these paths, one of the gates has seized up and you may have to climb over. However the paths are quite good. After a couple of miles we come out on to the road a few hundred yards north of the car park at the north end of Crummock Water. So far it’s been more or less level going but at the car park we begin the fairly steep but short ascent of Brackenthwaite Hows. Some great views from the top. We make our way down to the shore of Crummock Water and should arrive at the boathouse, this will probably be our lunch stop. After lunch we make our way along the side of Crummock Water all the way to the foot of Rannerdale Knotts. For those who have had enough you can take the flat route on to Buttermere, for the more energetic it’s onward and upward to the summit, it’s quite a steep climb but well worth the effort. From the summit it’s downhill all the way along some lovely grassy paths to Buttermere and very welcome refreshment. Nothing too strenuous really and the walk will be done in the usual relaxed McKay style.
