Muckle Toon South
From our usual starting point at the Kilngreen car park (Map Ref 363 849), we walk south to the Thomas Telford bridge, cross it and then stroll through the new town, cross the Wauchope Water by the footbridge near the Parish Kirk, and begin the gentle ascent of Warblaw, with its distinctive mast (good track all the way, just a gentle meander!).
After admiring the panoramic views from the 275 metre summit (it will, of course, be a lovely, clear day),  we strike out southwards across open hillside (soggy in parts), descending to the track that will lead us ultimately to Old Irvine farm.  We retiern towards Langholm by a mixture of farm road, old A7, new A7 (a very short stretch) and fishermen’s path to the Skipper’s Bridge, where we can observe progress on the repairs being done to the pier damaged during last winter’s floods.
Now on the east side of the Esk once more, a steepish set of steps lead us up to the line of the old railway, where turn southwards for a short distance, climbing gently on to the lower slopes of Whita Hill (not Whitta, as the signposts have it!), and return to our starting point by whichever of the possible paths seems most interesting on the day.
If we have not dawdled too much, there is the prospect of tea, coffee and delicious home baking at the Canonbie Community Cafe at Canonbie Parish Church on the way home

My plan is as follows:-

Park at Dob Gill car park (NY 316 140) at the west side of Thirlmere.

There is normally a charge of £7 for cars for over 4 hours parking.  However, following Storm Desmond, work is still being done to clear damage to the forest area surrounding the car park and no charge is levied at present.

Route is:-

Dob Gill car park – Bank Crags – Brown Rigg – Stone Hause – Bell Crags - Blea Tarn Fell – Standing Crag – Ullscarf – Black Knott – Wythburn Fell – Beacon on Wythburn Fell – Birk Crag – Harrop Tarn – Dob Gill – Dob Gill car park.

Approx 8 miles

Cheers

Phil

B Walk

Cold Fell

8 Miles Grade 2

Leader: John McKay

X

We set off from a parking spot on the road between Talkin and Forest Head, about half a mile before Forest Head.( OS Landranger 86 GR 576 572 ). We head along the road to Forest Head and through the quarry to the quaint little hamlet of Howgill, This is now an official, proper, signposted walk so we might come across a few tourists.  At Howgill We turn south east and make our way up towards the summit of Cold Fell. It’s a fairly gradual ascent. After about a mile we take a diversion and go north to visit the impressive cairn on Tindale Fell (547m) and we then retrace our steps and we keep going south till we reach yet another very impressive cairn at the summit of Cold Fell. (621m). Weather permitting the views are fantastic, a real panorama. We then head west over grassy fells(no real paths to speak of) and with a bit of luck we arrive at the Gairs, a long abandoned house.  We carry on west for a short distance then turn north on the path which will take us past Talkin Fell. If we are feeling energetic enough we can go to the summit (381m) but we can give it a miss if we don’t feel up to it. From Talkin Fell it’s then only about half a mile back to the cars. Somewhere along the way we will stop at a suitable spot for lunch. We will set off for Hayton Farm Shop for refreshments. I went there for the first time only a week ago and I was very impressed. A lovely walk, not too strenuous and we will take our  time.
