Merrick Weekend

The A walk on Sunday 21st June will be the highest peak in Southern Scotland,  Merrick.  The walk is quite a long one but comparatively gentle with no steep ascents and an excellent path all the way from the shores of Lock Trool,  the site of an old battle against the English, celebrated by Bruce’s monument, to the summit.  If the weather is decent then the views will be unrivalled,  from Cumbria,  the Solway Firth,  the Irish Sea,  Ailsa Craig,  the Rhins of Kells and all points in between.

As it is not within easy day time distance,  Lauren and I will be booking a b & b in Newton Stewart and having an evening meal there.  If there was sufficient interest,  we could arrive early on the Saturday morning and have another walk on the Saturday.  There is plenty to do in the Galloway Forest Park and it could be a lovely weekend.  We would also plan to have a meal somewhere on the way back to Carlisle,  possibly in the Dumfries area.  If you are interested could you either phone Lauren or me (01768896517) or else send me an email on familycourtadvice@outlook.com.

Further to the previous note about the Merrick Weekend.  Lauren and I are staying at Corsbie Villa in Newton Stewart and they do have (as I write) 3 single rooms and a couple of twin rooms free.  The b & b is about half a mile from the village centre and there are some excellent pubs and restaurants there and there is one pub that certainly did lovely evening meals.  Newton Stewart is about 80 miles from Carlisle and Loch Trool is a further 20 miles (you have to go through Newton Stewart to get there).  We will be setting off from Bruce’s monument on the Sunday at 10.30am if anybody wants to come totally independently. You would need to leave Carlisle no later than 8am.  On the Saturday we are intending to climb Corserine on the Rhinns of Kells – another beautiful walk,  very different from the Lake District.  We can offer lifts to 2 people if anyone wants to come along.  We also intend to have a meal en route back from Merrick.
