Outdoor Leisure No. 5 NY497 486. Forestry Car Park at High Stand.
When I first walked these paths in early Spring everything was clear and well
defined. However, walking it again last Thursday, 22nd I discovered things had
changed somewhat. From the car park we walk through the woods due west
and then turn towards Black Moss Pool. We turn right towards Aiketgate.
At the hamlet we turn left at the “Y” junction and follow a footpath on the left
pointing diagonally across a series of fields. This is where things go a bit wrong
because the farmer has planted maize in one field and potatoes in another and
completely obliterated the footpath. There is no other way apart from going
round the maize and across the potatoes. However, once across that, it all gets
lovely again and there are spectacular views. We make for Hills Ends’ farm and
follow the track to the Armathwaite to Weatheral Pastures road. We turn left and follow the railway line until we reach a tunnel which we go through to join the Armathwaite Road turn left and walk along until we reach the viaduct. Here we turn right to Drybeck Farm. We follow the Eden for a while through lovely woodland where there is a nice picnic spot opposite Holmwrangle. Further along we climb a short steep bank and then walk along or cross a few fields (which are grass) before turning left and back towards High Stand. This walk will now be known as the “Vegetable walk” which is
much better than my previous one - the dreaded “Midge walk”! There’s also a few stiles. I hope I haven’t put you off
