Langholm Area

7 miles  Grade 2

Leader: Nancy McLure

Sands: 9.15am

Kiln Green Car Park Langholm: 9.45am

Meikledale walk, Option 1 of Langholm Walks, Walk 14

We will meet at Kilngreen Car Park, Langholm, where there are toilets about 9.45. Then we will  drive 5 miles north up the A7 to park at Ewes Hall Car Park. From there we walk south briefly before turning right up the track beside the Meikledale Burn to Rigfoot. We turn left and follow the track up Wolf Hope, a lovely valley with only sheep and perhaps other wildlife for company. We will see the Lady Florence Stone near the head of the valley. The next part of the walk is on rough wet ground as we climb to hit the boundary fence at Wolfhope Head. We then turn right and follow a rough track to Broad Head and then reach the intersection of the forestry track. This is a good spot for lunch before we turn down the forest track following Jock Hope's Burn to Burngrains and back to Rigfoot and Ewes Hall Car Park. This is a great walk on a clear day and the Buccleuch Centre will be our destination for refreshments on our return to Langholm. In the event of mist or fog we will do a different walk.

A Walk

Dale Head-High Spy-Nitting Haws-Castle Crag

9 Miles Grade 1s

Leader: John McKay

We set off from Rosthwaite and make our way up through the old quarry to Dale Head Tarn, a short coffee stop then up to Dale Head. Its a few years since I did this walk but I remember it very clearly. It is one of my favourites and has many memories for me. It was the first and only time I have seen a Brocken Spectre ( Google It ) and the photo on the Home Page of the website was taken on that day on the summit of Dale Head.

(2470ft-753m)It’s then back down to the tarn and on to High Spy and Nitting Haws. Nitting Haws also has some great memories for me for other reasons. On my first visit I took the wrong (scary) way down, you will be pleased to know I do know the right way now. We finish off with a quick trip up Castle Crag, if you are feeling tired you can always miss it out but I can never resist it, it’s a magical little mountain. We end up back in Rosthwaite for refreshment or we can go into Keswick. It is quite a tough walk but quite wonderful and well worth the effort. It will be a trip down memory lane for me and I’m already looking forward to it. Why don’t you join me.

John

Parking at the Portinscale bridge (the Keswick side) we walk along the level lake side path then we take a right turn leaving the lake heading for Manesty. Walking along the road only for about 200/300 yards we take the path on our left signed to Catbells, there is a bit of a climb but not too bad or long (we don't go all the way up to Catbells) then we level off and walk along the terrace to the end where the cattle grid is then it's back through the woods to Portinscale where there is a cafe for refreshments. This is not a long walk and on a clear day should get some lovely views without the effort of a strenuous climb.
