A Village Ramble, Wetheral Circular

9 Miles Grade 3

Leaders: Chris & Tom Fortune

This is a rather pleasant meander around some of the satellite villages to the East of the city, with very little road walking, as the majority of the ramble is on bridleways and footpaths. Because it is set mainly in the countryside stiles are inevitable, particularly on the Scotby - Cumwhinton section and several of these are in varying states of repair.

The walk will begin and end in Wetheral, as there is an attractive café there, and then we proceed to Warwick-on-Eden and from there we cross the golf course to Scotby. We will leave here by a variety of bridleways to Cumwhinton and then onto our return into Wetheral via Wetheral Woods and the River Eden.

A point to note is that if there has been recent rain, and because of the time of year both grass and foliage are quite high so it could be rather wet on the legs. Hope to see you on the day.

Sands 9.15am

We  start at the lane below Rydal Mount and begin our ascent of Nab Scar which seems to punch above its height at 455m. Then it’s on to Heron Pike (621m) with fine views (hopefully) of Rydal Beck below and the other side of the Fairfield horseshoe. Then a bit more ascent to Great Rigg (767m) and we have completed about 40% of the Fairfield Horseshoe. At this point we turn back slightly and head down to Stone Arthur (503m). Strangely, there is quite a bit of descent before we reach the summit. I think I know where it is now !  Then, it’s a steep descent back to Grasmere for quality but perhaps expensive refreshments.

C Walk

Grasmere-Rydal Circular

6 Miles Grade 3

Leader: Hilary Farrer

We leave Grasmere hot on the heels of the 'B' walk as they head along Red Bank Road, but fear not we are not going up to the lumpy bits above Elterwater, instead we will head for Loughrigg Terrace, with wonderful views of Grasmere. We will then drop down to Rydal Water for a nice easy walk along the shore path. The easy bit over, we will then climb the hill to Rydal Mount, those who feel like running are free to do just that, I will be walking and if the recce is anything to go by, not very quickly. We then head along the Corpse Road back to Grasmere, depending on the weather we may have lovely views of distant mountains.

Coach Walk: Rosehill 8.50am, Sands 9.00am

We leave Grasmere by the Red Bank Road and take the path which heads towards Elterwater. Looking back we have lovely views of Grasmere Lake. We head down towards Elterwater  and this path can be rough in parts and is prone to be rather damp in places. Once down we go through the pretty village of Elterwater and head towards Skelwith fold by the riverside path. From hear we take the minor road (rather steep) near Neaum Crag towards Loughrigg Tarn and take the path along the lower slopes of Loughrigg Fell. Then it is across the fell towards Rydal Caves heading towards Grasmere first taking the Lakeside path and ultimately the Red Bank Road completing the circle.
