A Walk

Green Bell - Randygill Top from Newbiggin on Lune

"Wiggle Walk"

8 - 9 Miles - Grade 2

Leader: Heather Perrin

Starting from Braithwaite. Parking is available near the school and the small chapel in Braithwaite, failing that it is on street parking. If going straight to the start please let me know, but I suggest we meet by the village shop at 10am.

A straight forward walk but with good views for a modicum of effort! From the village shop we follow the lane and the farm track towards a steady but gentle ascent of Barrow on a wide track. Having reached the top and admired the views there is a slight descent before making our way to the base of Outerside. Another gradual ascent takes us to the summit of Outerside, where we can look back and admire the route we have just taken. Descending with some care we then follow the easy track from Stile End back into Braithwaite.

This will probably be unrecce-d so come with your maps and apps so we can have discussions (!).  Hopefully we shall end up at the Lune Springs Café in the Garden Centre.

From Newbiggin Main St (this makes it sound like a metropolis) we shall find the footpath south west leading to the yellow road near Sandwath, from there on to the path, more or less due south to Green Bell (605 metres) where there is a trig point.  Heading south west, down a bit

and up a bit we reach Randygill Top.

Not shown on the map but there is a track of sorts

leading steeply down to the narrow saddle of Leathgill Bridge

(which isn’t a bridge).  We follow the track north over Hooksey and just before Potts, start to wiggle our way eastwards to return to Newbiggin.

This is a long but generally flat A/B walk with no appreciable climbing. (Honestly Anne).

We will visit the four former Westmorland villages of Shap, Maulds Meaburn, Crosby Ravensworrh and Orton as well as the historic and rather sinister Flass House.

From Shap we follow the Coast to Coast walk as far as Oddendale  with the sounds of the M6 for company.

At Oddendale we part company with the Coast to Coast and the M6 and head east to Maulds Meaburn. We then follow the River Lyvennet past Flass House to Crosby Ravensworth.

The route from Crosby Ravensworth to Orton follows field footpaths until we rejoin the Coast to Coast just short of Crosby Ravensworth.

This is a circular walk starting at the picturesque village of Orton. Heading east, then north, we climb gently up to Orton scar and the high point of the day at the monument, which commemorates the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria and commands superb views in every direction.

Continuing on we take the minor road towards Crosby Ravensworth for  a while ,then turn off over the moorland to Robin Hood's grave ( a large pile of stones), probably our lunch stop.

A green grassy gully leads to the edge of the moorland, and then all downhill back to Orton using the distinctively whitewashed church tower as our direction finder.

Refreshments available at the Chocolate factory or the Orton scar tea rooms.
