A Walk

Grey Mare's Tail

8 Miles Grade 1

Leader: John McKay

We start the walk from Stonethwaite, where parking is free. We immediatly cross the bridge over Stonethwaite beck and head in a southerly direction along the Cumbria Way. At Smithymire Island we cross back over the beck on a footbridge  to get access to the approach to Eagle Crag. There is a short walk before we take the steepish pull up the first bit of the hill. This is steep but really short, it should take about 20minutes. We arrive beside Eagle Crags where there is a style that takes us onto the interesting part of the hill. There is a very short ‘hands on’ section, ok, its some very minor scrambling. No exposure, about 20feet of fun, up an easy section of rock. This will be of no issue to anyone. From here its a zig zag of terrace like terrain to get us on the summit. Eagle Crag is a small hill, but really feels like a proper mountain, the views down Langstrath Valley are brilliant.

Its then an easy walk over to Sgt Crag. Its then due South toward Long Crag. We will go across the top of Long Crag, at times there are no paths but the going is easy. The views down Greenup Gill are excellent. Its then a short distance to pick up the main path taking us onto High Raise.762m. From here you can take in the Langdale Fells falling away below.

We retrace our steps to Greenup Edge and down via Lining Crag. This again has some cracking views. Its then all the way down via the beck.

This is a walk with a bit of everything. Mostly good paths a bit of minor scrambling and spectacular views. Three Wainwrights to bag along the way. I would say this is a relatively tough walk but well worth the effort. It does say 09.00 at the Sands but will wait to 09.15 in case theres any problems with traffic.

Be there or be square.

Pete.

Car Walk Sands:9.00am

I cancelled this walk a few weeks ago as due to injury, I didn’t think I would be able to manage it. I’m still not sure if I’ll manage it but due to popular demand I’ve decided to give it a go. I have a feeling I will be doing it very slowly. We set off from the NT car park on the A708 Moffat to Selkirk Road (GR 185 145). We set off up the path to the Grey Mare’s Tail (Waterfall). It’s quite a steep climb for the first half a mile, alongside Tail Burn, to the waterfall, but it then levels off for about a mile before we round the hill and come to the lovely Loch Skeen. We will probably have a short coffee stop at this point before heading off across what is usually a rather muddy section to reach the start of the next steep ascent, Lochcraig Head. The good news is that the climbing is more or less over for the day, there are a couple short climbs still to go but nothing serious. We follow the fence all the way round, keeping it on our right, till we reach the high point of the day, White Coomb (821mtrs – 2694ft). It’s then downhill all the way till we reach Tail Burn. This could be the tricky bit, if the burn is in full flow it might be difficult to cross without getting our feet wet, but that’s all part of the great adventure. After crossing the burn we rejoin the path we came up and head back down to the car park. Somewhere along the way we will find a suitable spot for lunch. One of my favourite walks that will end with a visit to the Rumbin Tum in Moffat.

B Walk

Langholm Area

8 Miles Grade 3

Leader: Nancy McLure

Sands: 9.15am - Kilngreen Car Park Langholm: 9.45am

We meet at the Kilngreen car park, Langholm at 9.45am which has free parking and toilets. We set off to the Buccleuch Park, climb the steps and follow the track to the summit of Warb Law, height, 295m. Our route from the hill follows a grassy path down into a felled part of the Kernigal Wood, possibly a lunch stop, before reaching Skipperscleuch and Skipper’s Bridge. Then we turn right and follow the road beside the River Esk before turning left on the Jenny Noble’s path. Next we walk along the disused railway line and then steadily climb the lower slopes of Whita Hill following the pylons. We now see Langholm nestling below us and descend to the town for refreshments at the Church Cafe,

very cheap at £2 per head and with sales table.
