A Walk
Castle Crag - High Spy - Portinscale
8 Miles Grade 2
Leader: Andy Williamson
Early Start: Rosehill 8.20am - Sands 8.30am
We start the walk from the car park at Gatesgarth Farm, currently a £4 charge for the day. If you like a warm up better get there early and go for a jog, as this goes straight into a long steep ascent up Fleetwith Pike via Fleetwith Edge. This takes us to the highest point of the day on the summit at 648m. It is hard work but has cracking views on the way up and the track gives it a real mountain feel. Its then down in the direction of Dubs Quarry to pick up a track that will take us to Blackbeck Tarn. There are some spectacular views at places along this track. Easy walking takes us to Innominate Tarn and a date with AW. From the tarn the summit of Haystacks is within easy reach.
Down toward Scarth Gap means there is some very minor scrambling to be done, this should not cause problems for anyone . Then all the way down to Buttermere and back to the cars. Lunch will be at lunch time. This is a relatively short walk so there will be no rush and who knows, there might be time to get an after walk cup of tea and a bit of cake on this walk. As always the weather can make or break a good hike, but if the weathers kind this is a cracking walk. Good paths and escalators all the way.
Be there or be Square. Pete

Coach Walk:Rosehill:8.20am Sands:8.30am
After departing the bus at Grange we simply follow the throng of people heading for Castle Crag. After the Remembrance Sunday service, we descend Castle Crag and head south briefly before turning west and climb a path up Tongue Gill which takes us up onto the ridge just above Dalehead Tarn. We head north along the ridge climbing to the top of High Spy. From here we continue north over Maiden Moor, Cat Bells, and Skelgill Bank before descending down to the road near Hawse End. From here we follow the Cumbria Way path into Portinscale. Refreshments will be taken in Portinscale if time allows. If so me personally I will be going to the pub.
Pick up time for the bus 16.45 hrs.

We meet at the Kilngreen car park in Langholm about 9.45am. Our walk heads south of the town via the Buccleuch Park, Beechy Plains and Murtholm to cross the River Esk again at the Skippers Bridge. We turn right and climb the steps up to the old railway line and head south. A tar road takes us to the bridge over the Tarras water and we turn left along the track following the Tarras roughly till we reach Cronksbank Bridge. We now turn and follow the road past the bird hide before turning right to Broomholmshiels and the track back into Langholm. Refreshments will be at the very reasonable church cafe, £2 for tea or coffee and scones, cakes etc. There is also a sales table.
From there it is a short walk back to the car park.
